Abstract :Silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) have unique optical properties, such as, a wide range of absorption and excitation; color tunability; and monochromatic light emission, owing to its quantum confinement effect. Therefore, silicon nanocrystal materials become a vibrant research object in the world due to their potential application. In this report, we study the synthesis of silicon nanocrystal by magnesium directed reduction the silica nanoparticle (SiO2 NPs). The SiO2 NPs and magnesium powder were mixed and ground together manually to give a grayish brown-colored powder, then heated at 670ºC for 5 hours under an argon atmosphere in a quartz tube furnace. Finally, the Si NCs were obtained as a dark browncolored powder. The size in the Si NCs powder was estimated to be a mixture of 10 nm and 5 nm by XRD, which is very similar to those found in the TEM results.
